How Often Should My Septic Be Pumped?

Septic systems are designed to recycle the wastewater produced in your home or business establishment back into the environment. Without proper maintenance of your septic tank system, it can be dangerous for your family, pose a threat to public health and affect neighboring property owners.

One of the most asked questions we usually hear from our customers is how often they should pump their septic tanks. Generally, we recommend that you schedule a septic tank pumping every three to five years. However, for a more detailed schedule, you need to consider the number of people living in a household and the size of the tank. The more number of people live in a house, the more frequent you need a septic tank pumping. If you also have a smaller tank, you will have to schedule your septic pumping more frequently.

You can also refer to the table below from ESPA USA for a more detailed explanation.

To set an example, if there are five people who live in a house, and the size of their tank is 1500 gallons, the schedule of their septic tank pumping is every 3.3years. The amount of water used and the volume of solid wastes in the wastewater will also be determining factors. Charlotte Septic Tank Service will help you understand the your pumping frequency based on all your criteria and the best part is you will only have to figure it out once.

Don’t let your septic tank reached its recommended capacity. Call Charlotte Septic Tank Service today and we will guarantee you a septic tank system working for many years.

How is septic tank pumping done?

  • The first step that we do in pumping and cleaning is locating  and exposing your tanks access lids.  Yes, you can dig them up yourself, or if you would rather, we would be more than happy to locate and uncover the lids for you to avoid inconvenience on your part.
  • With the access lids now uncovered and open, we will note the liquid level of the tank in relation to the tank’s outlet pipe. A liquid level below the outlet pipe is usually an indication of a tank leak.  However, a liquid level above the outlet pipe can indicate a problem with the pipe to the drain field or the drain field itself.
  • After we took note of the liquid level in your tank, we will now lower a “vacuum” hose into the tanks manholes the pumping process begins.  The hose is attached to a strong pump on our pumping truck which will in return suck out all of the solids and liquids from your septic tank and into our truck
  • Our skilled technician will watch for back flow from the tank outlet pipe. Significant back flow is an indication of a drain field system backup. However, a small amount of back flow can indicate a sag in the pipe to the drain field.
  • Your tank will be cleaned out thoroughly by our technician. We use a tool called a septage spoon and a process known as back flushing that will help loosen all the sludge in the corners of the tank allowing it to be removed.  The walls of the tank are then sprayed with clean water leaving only a clean tank.
  • After Pumping our technician will conduct an inspection inside the empty tank and note any signs of structural damage such as an open weep hole, leaking midseam, damaged baffles, or any cracks.  If one of our technicians found anything out of the ordinary or any sign of current or impending problems, we will notify you and offer advice on how to remedy the situation.
